Welcome to The Writing Center at
Sophia University's Faculty of Liberal Arts

The Writing Center is available to all students and faculty of the Faculty of Liberal Arts. Tutorials are held during term starting at 10:15 and finishing at 4:00 most days. All sessions are 45 minutes, one-to-one, or small group, with a trained writing tutor. Students can sign up for a session by visiting the Writing Center office in building 10, level 4. Students are advised to prepare for the tutorial by bringing a draft of the assignment they would like to discuss along with an assignment task sheet, if available. The appointment should be made with plenty of time for the student to make changes to the draft before the assignment due date.

Opening day for spring semester: This semester's first tutorials were held April 22nd.

* Workshop Wednesdays! Check in the Writing Center Office for information. Workshops for Spring 2013:
  • Writing in Academic Style (May 8th)
  • Grammar Workshops (May 15th, May 22nd)
  • Finding Sources (May 29th)
  • Citing Sources (June 5th)
  • Integrating Sources (June 12th)

Who we are
There are currently 10 tutors, either current graduate students at Sophia, or Sophia alumni. They are trained in both theory and practices of peer tutoring. Additionally, as students or former students, they will have special insight into assignments and teacher expectations.

*History*

The writing center opened in 2004 as one of the "GP" (Good Practice) projects established in the Faculty of Liberal Arts with funding from the Ministry of Education, awarded in recognition of excellence in undergraduate education. Since then it has held thousands of tutorial sessions.
What we do
Tutors will ask questions about your assignment and draft, and will offer advice and answer questions you have about your assignment. What you bring can be any size or length, or it may just be an outline. We also provide advice for preparing an outline for a speech or presentation, and writing your resume in English.

To help you prepare for your tutorial, feel free to download, print and complete the Preparation Form.

What we don't do
Tutors will not edit your paper for grammatical mistakes. They will, however, discuss the grammar uses you have made. Please do not come to the tutorial empty handed. You should at least bring the task information, and some notes if possible. We will not write the paper for you!
